Santiago Cathedral, SpainAfter the mass, we steped out and went to one of the restaurants in Santiago for lunch. We all deserved it! After lunch, we returned back to the atrium of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral to wait for our ride to Portugal. I used those few minutes to sketch the cathedral. I wonder if you noticed a curious coincidence: the final drawing off my journey from A Coruña to Santiago de Compostela ends on 25th July ... Saint James' Day (Santiago Apostol)!

Santiago Cathedral, Spain PDF Print E-mail

Santiago Cathedral, SpainThere was an enormous crowd in the atrium of the Santiago Cathedral. People from all over the world were there and it seemed that we already knew everybody. Everyone passed through the same dificulties that we did and that fact gave us a sense of belonginess. There were Australians, Germans, French, Spanish, Americans... It looked like we were in the navel of the world! Everybody was smilling at each other. In a magical moment, our Polish friends managed to find us in the middle of the crowd. It was a very emotional moment! When the Cathedral doors opened, a sea of people entered and it was simply awsome! We felt like heroes and, at the same time, insignificant in front of the greatness of the Cathedral! Unforgetable moment!

Hórreo, Spanish granary PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 23 July 2012 21:02

Hórreo, Spanish granaryOn the last day, we were all happy. The pain had gone away and all we could think about was to get to cathedral for the Pilgrim Mass. It was a typical Spring day. Along the way, we saw many granaries, like the one in the drawing, where people store their cereals. The Spanish call them "hórreos". We were familiar with this kind of construction, as it also exists in northern Portugal. I didn't think about drawing them at first, but we saw so so many of them, that, on the very last day, I felt like if I didn't, an important part of the Camiño wouldn't be in my sketchbook.

Relaxing in Sigueiro, SpainAfter the night walk, we were so awake that, instead of going straight to bed, we went to the terrace of the bar in the hostel where we were going to pass the night. The weather was a bit better and we took the oportunity to talk and relax. We could already sense the smell and the spirit of Santiago, where we would arrive the next day and it had a relaxing effect on everybody.

Sigueiro church, Spain PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 July 2012 15:58

Sigueiro Church, SpainIt was a tough day. The fatigue was showing on everybody, so we spent the day walking a bit slower with not as many stops. The Camiño took us through the woods. We saw many people walking in the Camiño in this fase, particularly the Spanish. We settled at the Sigueiro Hostel, a private one - not part of the net of Camiño hostels. My mind was also very tired and I only found some peace to draw at night. Well, I had to convice my partners to go for a night walk to find something beautiful to draw. The only thing we found was the church.

Hostel in Bruma, Spain PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 18 July 2012 19:07

Hostel in Bruma, SpainAfter walking 42km in the rain and freezing wind, we arrived at the hostel in Bruma at 22h03. I will never forget the exact hour because we knew, from the sign on the hostel porch, that the closing time was at 22h. The man in charge of the hostel didn't wanted to let us in and, for a few minutes, we expected the worse: sleep in a bus stop. Happily, we managed to convince him to let us in, by promising him that we wouldn't make any noise. Our Polish friends, who arrived earlier, offered us some chorizo and Santiago pie for dinner. In the end, things worked up very well!
